The meshing of minds and spirit

In a revolutionary seminar which coupled Senseis with their Sempais, it was precisely the issues mentioned above which were confronted. In the rustic, pastoral setting of the Nordia Village, veteran and young BFP leaders put their heads together to discuss how to utilize martial arts as a catalyst for social education. Nachum Katz, CEO of Budo for Peace, captured the essence of this undertaking, "the kids come to these activities to learn martial arts, to enhance their strength and become less vulnerable; they marvel in and are attracted to the East and its teachings, to the discipline, beauty and aesthetic nature which are expressed through them. We on the other hand, we wish to teach them a way of life. In order to succeed, we need to cloak these fundamental values and ethics under the veil of physical training in a way in which they will soak in both essential elements at once.... We mask it in sugary delights, in the form of martial arts training, techniques, fun, trips and seminars, in this manner we ease the 'swallowing of the pill' and help to develop a better way of life." Nestled in this shore side resort, our leaders spent an intensive and stimulating two days discussing and embodying the BFP Dojo Charter which they collectively devised. "Everyone is equal; everyone deserves an equal opportunity and opinion", "We wish to lead by personal example, to spark personal growth and development and to assume the responsibility to implement and promote the values of Budo beyond the dojo, applying them to our daily lives and communities".

The novel seminar also included a series of energetic team building exercises which spurred the group spirit as well as an electrifying array of martial arts styles, performances and training sessions, whereby both sets of leaders were able to exhibit not only their impressive leadership capabilities but those on the mat as well. Charged with a renewed sense of responsibility to embrace the ideals and vision of BFP and encourage its reverberation in their surroundings, our Senseis and Sempais will personify the attitude, understanding, sensitivity and fortitude needed to impart the value-based, thought-provoking viewpoints central to BFP to the impressionable youth of their communities.
